Technical University of Munich (TUM) and German Aerospace Center (DLR) offer a joint appointment procedure for a
Full Professor (m/f/d) in » Navigation «
combined with the position of the
Director (m/f/d) of the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich
starting in the summer semester 2022. The position is a tenured W3 position. The jobholder will be appointed as a professor at TUM and granted leave with a reduced teaching load (2 hours per week) to take over the management of the DLR Institute in Oberpfaffenhofen (Jülich model).
Scientific Environment
The DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation plays a
formative role in the fields of satellite navigation, optical
space communications and aeronautical communication. Approximately
200 people work at the institute's sites in Oberpfaffenhofen and
Neustrelitz, developing and testing new systems and procedures for
radio transmission and radiolocation. They are used for the
area-wide provision of multimedia content, as well as for the
Internet connection of satellites, aircraft or remote areas.
Optical transmission methods are being developed for the area of
high rate transmission between satellites and to the ground. In
satellite navigation, great emphasis is placed on safety-critical
applications that require very reliable position and time
determination, as well as on the ability to locate in canyons and

Aerospace and Geodesy at the TUM School of Engineering and Design.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include managing the DLR Institute of
Communication and Navigation, as well as teaching bachelor, master
and PhD students at TUM and therefore supervising and promoting
young scientists. The applicant should be scientifically qualified
in several of the following fields of work of the Institute:
satellite navigation, communication, optical transmission and
cybersecurity to lead the work at the DLR Institute of
Communication and Navigation.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with an exceptional international
scientific and teaching reputation and an established excellent
academic record through an internationally recognized research
program. Several years of experience in leading larger
groups/departments or institutions are considered an asset.
Furthermore, the ability to successfully acquire third-party
funding, to setup regional, national and international
interdisciplinary cooperation with industry and the transfer of
research results, are required. Industry experience and experience
in technology transfer are desirable. A university degree, an
outstanding doctoral degree and/or an equivalent scientific
qualification are required. For teaching purposes pedagogical
aptitude is mandatory. Substantial research experience abroad is
expected.
A prerequisite for employment at DLR is the willingness to undergo
a security check in accordance with the national security check
law (Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz § 8 ff
SÜG).
